Mr. White was the first African-American member of the Cleveland Orchestra, joining in 1957. He was my cello teacher for several years prior to my move to attend Interlochen Arts Academy in high school.
He told me stories about the orchestra having to threaten to cancel a concert when they were on tour due to the venue not allowing people of color onstage. In another instance he was rudely told to get away from the limousines that had been reserved to transport the orchestra from the airport. From these stories my resolve to stand up against discrimination was solidified.
Throughout my time studying with Mr. White, he would often teach me without charge, aware of the financial strain my family was under. Because of his acts of generosity I was able to build the foundation of a professional career in music, and now have the opportunity to pull others up behind me, a responsibility I shoulder with delight.
